Barcelona haven’t been happy with refereeing this season, and Sunday’s Supercopa de Espana final wasn’t the first time in the 2020/21 campaign that Ronald Koeman has been critical of decisions.
After the defeat against Athletic Club, the Dutchman bit his tongue somewhat but still made his feelings quite clear.
“I better not say anything about the referee, it would be repeating things I don’t like. I’m not going to give my opinion,” said Koeman.
Koeman wasn’t happy with the number of fouls Athletic were allowed to make and appears to be fed up with decisions seemingly going against his side this season.
The Blaugrana boss has complained about officiating this campaign after games against Getafe, Sevilla, Real Madrid and Juventus.
“I don’t understand VAR, I think it’s only VAR when it’s against Barcelona… it’s been five matches and it hasn’t benefitted us in any of them,” said Koeman after the Clasico loss to Real Madrid.
He hasn’t limited his critique to games involving his team either, questioning the decision not to award Eibar a penalty against Real Madrid in December.
“Nine out of 10 Madrid fans will tell you that’s a penalty. Most people don’t understand why sometimes they’re called and sometimes not,” said Koeman.
On Sunday, he wasn’t quite so outspoken, but his comments showed his unhappiness once again at the refereeing and VAR calls Barcelona have been getting this season.
