Some residents of Takoradi are pushing the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) to de-congest the central business district (Takoradi Market Circle) in the wake of the rise in positive Coronavirus cases.
The residents, who are pushing for the exercise, believe the time to decongest the market was now, considering overcrowding the market was grappling with.
The Takoradi central business district has become an unbearable place for motorists and pedestrians.
This is because hawkers and traders have virtually taken over routes reserved for pedestrians, displaying and selling their wares in the process.
The frontage of PZ Cussons and the Ghana National Fire Service, for instance, are the two worst areas hawkers and traders have virtually taken over, displaying their wares.
With fish sellers, they have succeeded in blocking the pedestrian pavement close to the Fire Service. Though these activities go on in the day time, the STMA appears unconcerned.
It is as a result of the aforementioned that some residents who spoke to this reporter would want the STMA to de-congest the market and get rid of the hawkers and traders.
Kofi Ansah, a resident who spoke to this file, said the market had become a nuisance because of the rise in the numbers of hawkers who have taken over the pavements. “You don’t feel like coming here because it has become a nuisance. Why do I have to struggle to find my way to the market, all because some people are not doing their work?”
Another woman, who gave her name as Comfort, also agreed that the market must be decongested so that there would be comfortable access for patrons. “You come to the market and you will have to struggle to enter the market. Even finding a place to park your car is a difficulty, because [the] walkways have been taken over.”
