Mr. Sumaila Yaw Boakye, Ashanti Regional Vice Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union of Trade Union Congress (GPRTU of TUC), has advised drivers to desist from careless driving during the Christmas festivities to eliminate or reduce the carnage on the roads.
According to him, the tendency for drivers to forgo the rules and regulations and guidelines is very high with the approach of Christmas.
Addressing the media in Kumasi, he advised all drivers against overloading, overtaking, over-speeding, drinking while driving, and over-indulgence in conversation with passengers, which he said could lead to fatal accidents.
The GPRTU Vice Chairman noted that though sales had dropped significantly, coupled with the emergence of the coronavirus, the situation did not allow drivers to misbehave on the roads by over-speeding to make up in sales.
He reminded drivers that they were part of the development process in the country and must play their roles well, especially during Christmas and beyond to protect lives.
Mr. Yaw Boakye also appealed to the government to take steps to remove unnecessary road ramps, especially those created by residents instead of the Department of Urban Roads, as they were the cause of most accidents. .
According to him, road ramps created by the department conform to standard specifications, unlike those mounted by the various communities that do not conform to any standard, thereby causing accidents.
The Vice Chairman pleaded with the government to reduce the number of police barriers on the roads, disclosing that the numerous barriers also accounted to over-loading which resulted in accidents, as drivers are compelled to over-load in order to raise enough to satisfy the police personnel on the roads.
