The Germany-based Ghanaian Manager for Climate Change at the United Nations (UN) Quarters in Bonn has been installed the new Asafohene.
Mr. William Kojo Agyemang Bonsu, ascends the stool under the name of Asafo Boakye Agyemang Bonsu II,
He swore the oath of allegiance to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace last Thursday December 17, 2020, at a well-attended swearing-in ceremony.
By dint of his installation, Asafo Boakye Agyemang Bonsu II becomes the automatic Akwamuhene of the Kumasi Traditional Council (Head of Akwamu Division) and the Overlord of Manso Akwamu, replacing Baffour Akyamfuo Kwame Akowuah III, who was de-stooled on June 20, 2019 by the Overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for gross insubordination.
The new chief emerged victorious from 22 contestants for the Asafo Stool.
The Ashanti King advised the new chief to be sober, transparent and fair in his reign, and to refrain from all transgressions that would bring the image of Manhyia Palace into disrepute.
“You should humble, transparent and fair in your dealings, and avoid misconducts that will tarnish the name of Manhyia Palace,” the Asantehene advised.
Otumfuo was quick to caution the new chief that he (Otumfuo) would not hesitate to crack the whip if the Asafohene violated the rules governing the Asante Kingdom.
“I will not spare you if you go contrary to the rules of Asanteman. I will depose you like I did to your predecessor,” he stressed.
Asafo Boakye Agyemang Bonsu II promised to deliver and not disappoint the Asantehene for accepting him for the Asafo Stool. “I will never let you (Otumfuo) down. I will work assiduously for the progress of Asafo and Asanteman in general.”
The Asafo Stool became vacant when Baffour Akyamfuo Kwame Akowuah III was de-stooled after eight years of reign as Asafohene.
He was found guilty of ten out of the 45 charges leveled against him by his elders.
The charges bordered on corrupt practices, including illegal sale of lands and lining his pockets with the proceeds, and flouting the great oath of Asanteman (Otumfuo’s Ntamkese), considered to be one of the pillars of the Asante Kingdom.
The de-stooled chief was also reported to have disrespected his elders and also failed to perform his duties, contrary to Asante customs and traditions.
