A taxpayer takes her turn in the screening
The Ashanti Newtown Taxpayer Service Centre (TSC) of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has organised a Free Health Screening Exercise for taxpayers in the catchment area.
The exercise, initiated as part of their corporate social responsibility for taxpayers in its catchment area, is intended to inculcate the importance of paying taxes in the minds of the general public.
It is GRA’s way of expressing its profound appreciation to the taxpayers for their willingness, understanding and cooperation in payment taxes all these years and to further encourage them to continue paying their taxes for Ghana towards national development.
Mr. Kenneth Adjei-Fah, the TSC Manager, disclosed that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is, by the exercise, also seeking to members of the public who are eligible to pay taxes and that when the taxpayers are healthy, they can work to make profit and pay their taxes for national development.
He noted that the Ghana Beyond Aid policy introduced by the President can only be achieved through the payment of taxes.
According to him, taxes are compulsory payments made by citizens and other nationals in the country to the state or government without receiving anything directly in return.
He disclosed that an alternative means of reducing inequalities arising from the distribution of wealth is to use the tax revenue by government to provide facilities that would be beneficial to the poor.
Some of such facilities in the case of Ghana are the Metro Mass Transit buses which charge affordable fares for the benefit of members of the public and public schools; National Health Insurance Scheme and School Feeding among others.
He said none of these initiatives would materialise if the citizens do not pay their taxes and for that matter, as statutory institution, GRA is charged with the responsibility of finding taxpayers, assessing them, collecting the taxes and accounting for them to the state. He added that the GRA cannot on its own accomplish the collection of taxes without the cooperation of the taxpayers.
