Some residents of Klagon, a town along the Nungua-Ashaiman highway and within the jurisdiction of the Nungua Traditional Area, have hugely commended the Chief of the town, Nii Bortey Klan I, for undertaking some development projects in the community.
According to the residents, the kind of projects being undertaken by the Chief are that which every community needs to ensure proper development.
Among the projects the Klagon Mantse has developed for the benefit of the people are a standard police station, now the Klagon District Police Command, a Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound, and a 12-seater public toilet.
The Klagon District Police Command and the CHPS Compound was commissioned some years ago by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Health Services (GHS) respectively, and are currently operating.
The 12-seater public toilet is also serving the needs of the people in the community and beyond.
Nii Bortey Klan I is also developing other projects, which are at various levels of completion, including a Fire Service Station, an office for the Commander of the Klagon District Police Command, and a Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.
Speaking in an interview with the Accra File, Isshaque Mujeeb Kutia, a former Assembly Member for the Klagon Electoral Area, said: “If all chiefs in the country would embark of projects just as the Klagon Mantse is pursuing, Ghana would be a better place to live.
“In other parts of the Greater Accra Region, all the chiefs and their elders do is that they sell the land to members of the public, buy big, big cars and marry more wives, while the community lack basic development projects,” he stated.
Explaining further, Mujeeb Kutia said when he first settled at Klagon 30 years ago, they were constantly being harassed by armed robbers and petty thieves, adding, “However, since the establishment of the police station about three years ago, our security is safe now.”
Another resident, Madam Judith, said she and her husband settled at Klagon12 years ago, and at the time, anytime she wanted to access health care, she had to travel to Nungua, Ashaiman or the Spintex Road.
“But now, with the construction of the CHPS Compound, all I need to do is to walk to the facility and access health care. It’s good for me as a mother, what more can I ask for?”
On his part, Nii Bortey Klan I said a few years after his installation as Chief of Klagon 17 years ago, he started receiving complaints from the residents about the insecurity in the area because of armed robbers and petty thieves.
NiiKlagon continued: “With time, others also started talking about other issues such as health care among others. Initially, I started knocking on doors of corridors of government for help, but to no avail. Years on, government after government, but nothing was coming, so I decided to take it upon myself, and this is how far we have come.”
He explained that when the Fire Service Station and the DOVVSU unit are completed, people in the community would not have to travel all the way to Ashaiman or Nungua for the basic things in life.
“That is what I hope to achieve, not only for myself, but most importantly, for my people, because when the people are living comfortable, then I, the Chief, can also live in peace without hue and cry,” he noted.
He appealed to chiefs in the Greater Accra Region and other parts of the country, not only to look at their personal interests, but also consider the welfare of their subjects, so as to bring peace and prosperity to their respective communities.
