The Mepe Traditional Council (MTC) in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region has warned the general public and media houses in the country to immediately desist from working with Mr. Awuku Gli directly or through his agents as the Paramount Chief of the area, with the stool name Togbega Awuku Anipati.
According to the kingmakers, their attention had been drawn to a publication made by the aforementioned person, who is parading himself as the Paramount Chief of the area, in the various media platforms.
They, therefore, entreat the general public to ignore any publication put out by such self-seeking individuals, since it is a recipe for chaos in the traditional area.
This was contained in a disclaimer dated Wednesday September 30, 2020 and signed by Togbe Kofi Amarfo, Senior Divisional Chief of the Akorvie Clan of Mepe.
The Senior Divisional Chief put it on record that the kingmakers unanimously have one Paramount Chief for the area, in the person of Togbega Komla Anipati V, and he should be recognised as such.
It could be recalled that the paper carried in its August 14, 2020 edition the headline “Mepe gets Paramount Chief after 12 years.”
In that publication, it was noted that the kingmakers had performed all the necessary traditional and customary rites leading to the installation of Togbega Komla Anipati V as the new Paramount Chief of the area.
The short but impressive installation ceremony redefined the rich tradition and custom of the area, with its corresponding display of culture and heritage amidst fan-fare.
The Mepe Traditional Area, which celebrates the annual Afenorto festival, has suffered a protracted chieftaincy dispute for nearly 12 years, following a dispute over which gate ascends the throne.
The area has traditionally not seen peace and unity following the unrest associated with the abortive attempts at the installation of a new Paramount Chief in 2011, after the demise of Torgbega Kwao Anipati IV.
That notwithstanding, the chiefs and people of the area, last Tuesday, paved the way for the installation of Togbega Komla Anipati V, known in private life as Morkli Ernest Komla.
The 43-year-old Paramount Chief holds an MBA in finance and is currently the District Credit Officer of the Micro Finance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) having oversight responsibilities of four districts.
He is married with three children and is a staunch member of the Assemblies of God Church.
Background to the paramountcy
Giving a brief traditional and historical background to the paramountcy, Togbega Anipati V reiterated that their great grandfather gave birth to two boys, namely Adzesu and Gli, with the latter ascending the throne four consecutive times, the last person being the late Torgbega Kwao Anipati IV.
He continued that the Adzesu Gate, which is the senior, decided to take its rightful position by ascending the throne after the demise of the Togbega Kwao, a situation that was misunderstood by the Gli Gate.
But, after extensive consultations among the kingmakers and the two families, all agreed that the Paramount Chief must come from the Adzesu Gate this time around.
The newly-installed Paramount Chief commended the chiefs and people of Mepe for maintaining the peace of the area, and the matured manner in which they handled the impasse that characterised his installation in 2011.
He mentioned that even though the people of Mepe fought gallantly in the Sir Garnet Wolsely War (Sagrenti War) which was between the British and the people of the Gold Coast in the 18th Century, today’s battle should be directed at fighting “issues of under development – that is poverty, diseases, lack of job opportunities among others.”
To him, the development of the area would be a mirage when there is no peace and unity, hence called on the people to come together and bring back the glory of Mepe.
He charged the people to recognise the importance of people gathering their resources and developing the traditional area in an atmosphere of peace and unity, hence, his call on the sons and daughters, and well-meaning Ghanaians and foreigners, to invest in the area.
