The Lanor Division, Dakakusi of Gbese Kponor and BobaTsangmer Divisions of the Osudoku Traditional Area, in the Greater Accra Region, say any attempt by Nene Aadegbor Ngmongmonwuyaa Animle VI, Paramount Chief for the Osudoku Traditional Area, to re-demarcate their land could spark a tribal conflict.
According to these clans, the Noryo or Norweyo (Yogwasi) land, which Nene Animle VI wants to re-demarcate, has a historical background and, to them, they do not need the intervention of the Paramount Chief to re-demarcate their boundaries, which have not been under dispute for centuries.
At a brief presser at Yokornya, Lanor Osudoku, all the divisions, led by Samuel Martey, the Nor Clan Head, said on July 14, 2020 the Paramount Chief served them letters that he wanted to re-demarcate the Yogwasi land.
When they sought reasons from him for his decision, Mr Martey said Nene Animle VI could not give the clans any proper explanation.
He said the clans later suspected the presence of some persons from the Lands Commission going onto the said Yogwasi land to carry out some measurements.
“But we want to, first and foremost, request the government to ask the Registrar of Lands at the Lands Commission and Land Title not to register or document any Noryo or Norweyo (Yogwasi) land at Osudoku in the name of the Paramount Chief of Osudoku Traditional Area.
“Secondly, we, clans and families, are prepared to lace our boots and defend our legitimate land as the only bona fide asset left for us by our ancestors,” Samuel Martey cautioned.
He explained that in Dangme areas, chiefs do not own lands, but they are merely custodians who hold the land in trust for families who are the allodial owners.
“Chiefs only represent their families at the Traditional Council meetings headed by the Paramount Chief, and this has been the trend and constitutional mandate of a chief in Osudoku.
“It is, therefore, surprising that lands that were discovered by settlement centuries past and well demarcated between families and clans of the various Divisions of Osudoku many years ago, especially the Noryo or Norweyo (Yogwasi) land, would be re-demarcated by the Paramount Chief of Osudoku, Nene Animle VI, and his cohorts for reasons best known to them.”
In order to keep the peace among the clans and divisions, Samuel Martey, on behalf of all the representatives, requested their Paramount Chief to renege on his decision to re-demarcate the Yogwasi land or they would pull out from the Traditional Council to their previous independent status.
The representatives were Nene Teye Asilevi IV, Lanor Divisional Chief, Asafoatse Tetteh Agbodja Atamah II, Nor Lanor Division, Asafoatse Kwesi Maaka II, Lanor Dadepiem, Abdulai Kwame Addo, Clan Head, Lanor Weguam and Numo Eric Lawer Masi Ahordji, Head of Boba Royal Family, Tsangmer.
After the press conference, The Chronicle called Mr Amanor, Secretary of the Osudoku Traditional Council and Spokesperson of the Paramount Chief, on the telephone for their reaction, but the calls went unanswered.
An SMS message to Mr Amanor on the subject was not replied either.
