The flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Ms Brigitte Dzogenuku, is reported to have blamed the recent attempts by Western Togolanders to take over the Volta Region on the lack of jobs for the youth.
In the estimation of the PPP flagbearer, if jobs were available, the young people who woke up at dawn to mount roadblocks in the Volta Region would not have had the time to engage in such a nation-wrecking act.
Drawing strength from the good book, Madam Dzogbenuku argued that the devil finds work for idle hands, therefore, the unemployed youth think of bad things when they are idle!
The Chronicle finds the argument by Madam Dzogbenuku a bit worrying, especially coming from a woman who, in three months from now, can possibly become the president of the land and would have the huge responsibility to defend the sovereignty of Ghana.
We, at The Chronicle, do not accept the submission that the action by the youth is justifiable because there are no jobs for them.
To us, the action by the Western Togolanders amounts to an attempt to destabilise the state, and we call on the state security agencies to drastically deal with them using all the arsenal at their disposal.
We are making this call because the so-called Western Togolanders are simply nation-wreckers, who should not be handled with kid gloves.
The Chronicle would also appeal to the government to deal ruthlessly with those it has identified as bankrolling the Western Togoland rebels.
We are particularly glad that the key actors, who have been identified as ultimately responsible for these events, are also on the watch list of the security agencies and are actually wanted at this point in time.
We believe no one should be spared, if found culpable, and for that matter, the assurance by the government that in the coming days, the security agencies would be publishing some photos and revealing the identities of persons involved is most refreshing.
For those who believe the government of the day is involved in this barbaric conduct, the least said about them the better, while the others who think there was intelligence failure, should better keep their eyes and ears on the ground, and relay useful information to the appropriate agencies to deal with people who wish to throw our beloved country into chaos.
We further urge the state security agencies not to allow politics to affect the execution of their duties in protecting the state from rebels.
Finally, The Chronicle would like to caution that suggestions that there are some political groups behind the actions by the Togolanders should not be swept under the carpet.
