The Volta Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says despite all the challenges the party went through, the region performed well in the just-ended voter registration exercise, when juxtaposed against figures recorded in the Ashanti and Eastern regions.
According to the party, the Volta Region, in 2019, had a total of 999,368 voters, but the figure reduced marginally to 928,267 in 2020. The Ashanti Region, the party continued, recorded 3,067,566 voters in 2019, but its figures also reduced 3,008,908 in 2020.
In the case of the Easter Region, 1,739,311 was recorded in 2019, but has also reduced to 1,614,461.
Addressing a news conference at Ho on Tuesday, this week, the Regional Secretary of the party, Mr James Gunu, said the Volta Region had demonstrated that it is indeed the stronghold of the NDC.
He, however, noted that the feat the party had achieved did not come on a silver platter, as there were several attempts to intimidate the people among other tricks to stop them from coming out to register, but their resilience won the day.
According to the Volta regional executives of the NDC, there were fourteen registration centers across the region that did not work on the first day of the third phase of the registration exercise. He mentioned constituencies where these supposed tricks occurred as Ketu South, Akatsi North, Keta, Anlo, Hohoe, South and Central Tongu.
He was, however, happy that the people of the Volta Region proved they were not Togolese, but Ghanaians. To Gunu, the compilation of the new register would, nevertheless, be meaningless unless it is linked up to the total liberation of Voltarians, and Ghanaians as a whole.
Mr. Gunu disclosed that the NDC had inaugurated a campaign team made up of seasoned politicians, and that very soon, constituency, ward and branch campaign teams would be put together, which were being done with the necessary inclusiveness.
He pointed out that the time had come for the members to intensify campaigning by getting the message of the NDC to the populace, warning that any member of the party found preaching “skirt and blouse” would be sanctioned.
The Volta Regional Secretary of the NDC also assured its supporters that it would retain all the 18 seats in the region come the 2020 general elections, and reap 98 percent of the total presidential votes for the former President, John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Gunu recounted a number of stories of the people of the Volta Region who suffered physical attacks, and were prevented and humiliated in their quest to exercise a simple civil responsibility as citizens to register.
According to him, for the first time in the history of Ghana, the nationality of the people in the Volta Region had been challenged by the government.
He said the NDC had picked intelligence that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Electoral Commission (EC) were allegedly planning what he called more evil on the day of elections, and road blocks that would make it difficult for people to access polling stations to vote.
