Work has begun on the construction of a GH¢1 million ultra-modern maternity block for the Salvation Army Hospital at Wiamoase in the Sekyere South District of the Ashanti Region.
It will comprise a theatre, consulting room, intensive care unit, reception, blood bank, records office, kitchen, matron’s office ante-natal and post-natal units, as well as an emergency unit.
The project, being executed by Prohaul Ghana Limited, is to be completed in four months.
Last Monday, the District Chief Executive, Mrs. Catherine Reckling, cut the sod for the commencement of the project to augment the existing facilities to enhance effective healthcare delivery at the hospital, which was established in 1968.
Major Stephen Boadu, Administrator of the Salvation Army Hospital appealed to the government to consider providing the facility with a children’s ward and ambulance to complement an old one currently in use.
The District Director of Health, Mr. Robert Mensah, noted that the Salvation Army Hospital caters for 2,000 patients daily from a population of 119,000 from the district, with 32,000 coming from the Wiamoase community.
According to him, the facility attends to 160 pregnant women and records 60 deliveries every month.
The Member of Parliament for Afigya Sekyere East Constituency, Mavis Nkansah Boadu, called for maintenance of the project when completed.
She advised the people to observe all the COVID-19 protocols until a vaccine is found for the virus.
The Chief of Wiamoase, Nana Boakye Yiadom, called for support of the citizenry for the government to enable it implement all intended projects in the district.
