Professor (Mrs) Rita Akosua Dickson has been inducted into office as the new Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for the period August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2024.
Until her appointment by the University Council at its 258th (special) meeting held on Thursday, June 25, 2020, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson was the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University.
She thus becomes the first female and eleventh Vice-Chancellor of the country’s premier Science and Technology University.
Prof. (Mrs.) Akosua Dickson, a product of the Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast, obtained her first degree in Pharmacy at the KNUST.
She went on to pursue graduate studies, leading to the award of a Master of Pharmacy degree in Pharmacognosy in 1999, and was appointed lecturer at the University in 2000, and further pursued a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Kings’ College, University of London, United Kingdom (UK).
She returned to teaching and research at KNUST in 2007, and got promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor of Pharmacognosy in 2009 and 2014 respectively
The new Vice-Chancellor takes over from Prof. Kwasi Obiri-Danso, whose term of office officially ended on July 31, this year.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, while addressing the inaugural ceremony at the KNUST Great Hall in Kumasi last Saturday, reminded the authorities of the university to adjust to the changing trends of university education, due to the advancement in science and technology in the 21st Century, and implored the new Vice-Chancellor to lead the drive in the university’s effort to come out with cutting-edge research findings and innovative ideas towards the nation’s progress.
The President assured KNUST of the government’s unflinching support in order to realise its dreams and aspirations, and called on the university community to rally behind the new Vice-Chancellor.
KNUST Chancellor Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, advised the new Vice-Chancellor to strive to bring her managerial and academic capabilities to bear for the sustainable growth of the university.
Otumfuo reminded the new VC of the need to pursue the University’s Strategic “Plan 2K25” with seriousness to enable the authorities achieve their vision and mission.
The Asantehene asked Prof. Akosua Dickson to endeavour to consider suggestions put across by the university community, saying she should bring all stakeholders on board in the discharge of her duties.
