Former President John Dramani Mahama, who is currently the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic (NDC), has vowed to uphold the peace and unity his former boss, the late Prof John Evans Atta Mils, brought to the country.
“I stand today before the tomb that holds the mortal remains of the Asomdwehene, the King of Peace. And I pledge that I will continue his fight for the peace and unity of this country,” he said at the 8th anniversary of the demise of the late President Atta Mills, last Friday, at the Asomdwe Park in Accra.
Mahama prayed for the peace Prof Mills stood for to guide the nation and his party to the victory they so desire, come December this year. This victory, he said, would enable the party to restore the peace and unity Ghanaians once enjoyed, same of which they are not enjoying at the moment.
He said: “May his peace and grace guide us as a nation. May his peace and grace guide us as a party to the victory we so desire in the elections of December, 2020. So that, as a party, and as a leadership, we shall restore to this country the peace and unity we once enjoyed.
“So that, as a leadership and party, we may put back to work the millions of people who have lost their job under this government. So that as a party and leadership, relieve Ghanaians of the excruciating hardship that they currently face.”
Later, in a post on his facebook page, Mr Mahama claimed Ghanaians are crying for peace and unity, and for a nation where all opportunities were open to all. According to him, Ghanaians are wailing for a nation where there would be justice for everyone, despite the ethnicity.
“Today, Ghanaians are crying for peace and unity. Today, Ghanaians are crying for a nation where all the opportunities will be open to all of us, and not a selected few. Ghanaians are crying for a nation where there will be justice for all, irrespective of your political affiliation, or your ethnic origin.
“Today, Ghanaians are crying for a nation where all of us will be considered as citizens, united in our diversity. Today, Ghanaians are crying for a nation where we shall all be equal before the law. May God grant us this peace and this unity,” he posted.
Also, the National Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, asserted that a person with the same trait of the late Prof Mills, who abhorred violence, is what Ghana needed now.
“In this moment of real challenges in which there is widespread violence and lawlessness, just because we are writing our names to be able to cast our votes, John Evans Atta Mills, the peace maker, John Atta Mills, the prince of peace, is who we need to calm waters,” Ofosu-Ampofo observed.
Acknowledging that Prof Mills had gone to have eternal rest, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo charged Ghanaians, especially participants present at the wreath laying ceremony which took place last Friday, what Prof Mills taught them.
“…But, alas, he’s no more, gone to join the hallowed ancestors who spent their lives and employed their strengths to build the country that we are all so proud to call our own. As we congregate here this morning to participate in this annual ritual, let us not forget what is truth and what he taught us,” he urged.
