The voter registration exercise at Hill Down Polling Centre in Kasoa Peace Town was disrupted yesterday by some alleged thugs who caused a commotion, including firing of gunshots.
The Chronicle gathered that the disruption dispersed potential registrants who had queued to register, with officials of the Electoral Commission running helter-skelter for their lives.
According to information gathered, three motorbikes, which were parked at the centre at the time the suspects arrived, were set ablaze.
It is blur what may have caused the brouhaha, but The Chronicle understands the said well-built men stormed the registration centre to prevent some people, they perceived should not be allowed there, from registering.
Their alleged action is contrary to the laid down regulation that party agents could challenge a person at the registration centre by picking and filing a challenge form, which a committee would sit to go into the merit of the matter and decide accordingly.
The suspects, Sulley Razak, Majeed Amadu, Suleman Yusuf and Razak Musa, who have been accused of the crime, have since been arrested by the police.
At about 10:00 GMT on Monday, July 20, 2020, the Kasoa Divisional Headquarters received a complaint of the presence of the group at the aforementioned registration centre.
DSP Irene Oppong, who speaks for the Regional Police Command, said the complaint was “that one person from the group pulled out a pistol and fired to scare people who had queued to register.”
According to her, the police, upon receipt of the report, “swiftly proceeded to the scene and arrested [the] suspects.”
DSP Oppong’s information to the press indicated that the four suspects have been sent to RCID/Cape Coast for investigation.
This is the second time gunshots have been recorded in the Kasoa enclave since the voter registration exercise began.
It would be recalled that the Odukpong Ofaakor Junior High School registration centre at Kasoa, on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, recorded the first gunshot incident.
These incidents of gunshots in Kasoa, the capital of the Awutu Senya East Municipality, have raised serious security concerns.
The sprawling community, which is the fastest growing town in the Central Region, has become the centre of criminal activities in the region.
The spillover of crimes in the Municipality are often witnessed at Awutu Breku and Bujumburam in the Awutu Senya West District.
