Residents in the Ahafo Region have commended Newmont Ahafo Mines for contributing massively to the fight against the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the region, especially in its catchment areas.
The commendation was disclosed when The Chronicle spoke to some of the residents to verify if the said gold mining company has been of help ever since the pandemic broke out.
According to them, Newmont Ahafo Mines has been of great help to the communities and entire region as far as the COVID-19 pandemic prevention is concerned.
They revealed that the managers of the company purchased airtime at a local radio station (Anapua FM 105.1) in Kenyasi for three months to sensitise the public on the virus every Tuesday.
Experts who are well vested in the subject and staff of the company were used to assist the residents get indepth knowledge, and the phone lines activated for questions, answers and suggestions.
“The education on the radio has really helped as to know more about the virus for our own good. We thank you Newmont,” the residents passionately stated.
The people recounted that the three months programme, which began in May and ended on 14th July 2020, has helped them to have a better picture of the virus and how to handle it.
On the supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the people said the company had donated a number of veronica buckets, hand sanitisers, gloves, face masks, infrared thermometers, tissue papers, washing bowls and others to some health facilities in the region, and even the Bono Region as well.
All these items are to ensure an effective fight is achieved to bring life to normal.
They further said, aside the mentioned interventions, Newmont Ghana has presented US$20 million to the Asutifi North District Assembly to help in the fight against the virus.
The three months weekly sensitisation exercise on COVID-19 by Newmont Ahafo Mines was handled by Samuel Osei, Acting Manager for Communication and External Relations, Ahafo Operations, Newmont Ghana, and Moses Arthur, Health and Safety Superintendent, Newmont Ghana.
The areas touched by the two personalities of Newmont Ahafo Mines concerning COVID-19 include history, update on people infected, causes, signs and symptoms, and preventive measures among others.
