The arrest of two officials of the Electoral Commission in the Northern Region for conducting the registration exercise illegally in their homes has driven the Jean Mensa-led electoral body crackers.

The two persons have been caught illegally registering residents in Tamale
Mumuni Abilla Yussif – 26, and Mohammad Yushaw Kongsoha – 32, were arrested on the morning of Friday, July 17, 2020 for allegedly registering 12 people in their homes. The registration equipment were seized and handed over to the police, who are still investigating the case.
Though the police are conducting investigations, the EC, which has vowed to compile a voters register that can withstand integrity test at any time, has already sacked the two staff who were involved in the illegality.
The commission has also promised to liaise with the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the offenders have been dealt with according to law.
In a statement released in Accra over the weekend, the EC insisted that it takes serious exception to the conduct of the two officials, because they were not officially sanctioned.
“The Electoral Commission has noted with grave concern acts of misconduct on the part of two temporary Registration Officials who were alleged to have been caught in the course of illegally registering residents of a community in Tamale. The Commission is currently working with the security agencies to ensure that the suspects are made to face the full rigours of the law.
“The officials have been relieved of their posts pending investigations. Meanwhile, the registration kit used for the alleged illegal registration remains in police custody. The Commission wishes to assure the general public that it will not shield any of its staff, temporary or permanent, who find themselves on the wrong side of the law,” the EC said.
Meanwhile, as a result of the massive interest being shown in the registration exercise, over seven million people have, within sixteen days, registered and issued with their voter cards.
The commission has projected to register about fifteen million people before the exercise comes to an end next month.
