Nana Addo with SHS students
The first beneficiaries of the Akufo-Addo government’s flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) policy are commencing their final examination today, Monday, July 20, 2020.
In all, some 313,837 final year students are set to take part in this year’s West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across the country.
The examination is starting today with project work for Visual Arts candidates, while theoretical papers are set to begin on August 3, and end with Principles of Cost Accounting and Technical Drawing on September 5.
Students taking part in the exams are going to choose from 60 subjects, made up of four core and 56 electives. The subjects are mainly focused on seven programmes, which are taught in the various SHSs.
They are Home Economics, Agricultural Science, General Arts, Business, General Science, Technical Skills and Visual Arts. The examination, which is taking place in the midst of the deadly plague, would be under strict adherence to the safety etiquettes laid out by the Health and Education ministries for schools.
Following the partial re-opening of schools to enable final year students especially to complete their syllabuses, the government and key stakeholders in the education sector agreed on some modalities to ensure the safety of the students.
Among such were the resolves to ensure that the final examination took place with adequate spacing between students to ensure social distancing, as well as students being made to put on their face masks.
President Akufo-Addo, who, in his address to announce the re-opening of schools, described these final year students of the public senior high schools as “Akufo-Addo Graduates,” has wished them well in their final exams.
“I send my best wishes to the 313,837 final year Senior High School students, who will, from Monday, 20th July, take the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE),” the President remarked.
In a statement yesterday, President Akufo-Addo urged everybody playing a role in the conduct of the entire examination to abide by all the protocols in the fight against the novel Coronavirus.
According to the President, the enhanced hygiene, wearing of masks and social distancing continue to remain the weapon in the fight to defeat the virus.
“Just as has been done over the course of the last four weeks since their return to school, I continue to urge everyone associated with the conduct of this year’s WASSCE, i.e. teaching and non-teaching staff, invigilators and students, to abide by the enhanced hygiene, mask wearing and social distancing protocols they have become accustomed to. They continue to remain our weapon in the fight to defeat COVID-19,” he stated.
President Akufo-Addo noted that everyone acknowledges education as the key to the future growth of the country. As such, he added that despite the pandemic, the youth must be guaranteed their prospects, and, thereby, preserve the collective future of the nation.
“Every Ghanaian acknowledges that education is the key to the future of our country. We, therefore, must do everything possible, even in the midst of pandemic, to guarantee the prospects of our youth, protect their potential, and, thereby, help preserve our collective future.
“Once again, I wish all the students the best of luck and Godspeed in their examination,” President Akufo-Addo reiterated.
