The Ashanti regional branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed its frustrations over what it described as military intimidation of its accredited party agents from performing their mandated duties at Tepa registration centers.
Mr. Kwame Zu, Regional Secretary, in a press statement, said the NDC expressed regret and frustration to make public that its registration agents accredited by the Electoral Commission to Tepa Senior High School (SHS) in the Ahafo Ano North Constituency were prevented from undertaking their lawful duty by military personnel.
According to the Regional Secretary, the Tepa SHS, as per the Electoral Commission (ECs) gazette, has two registration centres, and does not qualify to be used as a special registration centre according to the Electoral Commission’s own publication.
He stated that the Electoral Commission, in spite of the flagrant disregard of its own publication, deployed 16 BVRs to the Tepa SHS for registration.
He alleged that military officers were deployed by the state to the Tepa SHS and prevented 14 of their agents from performing their lawful duties.
The NDC Regional Secretary regretted that even NDCs regional party monitoring agent, Mr. Brogya Genfi, who has been duly accredited by the EC, was not granted access to the registration centres.
He disclosed that they were informed by the military personnel that they had been ordered to prevent any NDC official and agents from accessing the registration centres.
Mr.Zu stated that a meeting which was convened by the District Police Commander over this unlawful restraint of deserving participants by the military, where all stakeholders were present did not yield the required results, because the military personnel were determined to execute the orders for which they were deployed.
He regretted that the country was turning into a military state where all what is done by the failed Akufo-Addo government is to use the military to unlawfully intimidate citizens for political gains.
In spite of these challenges, Mr. Zu encouraged all party members in the Ahafo Ano North Constituency to be resolute, even in the face of extreme intimidation.
