Residents of Akpo, a farming community in the Yilo Krobo Municipality, have launched a passionate appeal to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Mr. Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor, to come to the aid of the community, in terms of development.
Notwithstanding the numerous development challenges facing the community, the residents mentioned the poor road network as the major challenge, and called on the MCE to fix it.
Speaking to the paper, a former Assembly Member for Akpo Electoral Area, Mr. David Kwao, disclosed that the basic road infrastructure connecting the area to other parts of the Municipality was virtually non-existent.
He mentioned that the many petitions to the Assembly could not stimulate or change the mind of the MCE to, at least, reshape the road, if not reconstruct it.
The former Assembly Member explained that a journey of 45 minutes, from Nkruakan, can take about two-hour through a detour as a result of an immotorable road, which can only pass for a footpath; a situation that has made the farming community one of the hard-to-reach areas in the Municipality
The dusty, pothole-ridden poor road network, which has led to many fatal accidents, has left the indigenes questioning their eligibility to access their share of the national cake.
To the former Assembly Member: “I think we are not part of Ghana. Every election year, [the] political parties promise to improve our road network when they secure power, but they don’t help us.”
The predominantly farming profession of the indigenes in Akpo and its adjoining communities make it a hub for agricultural produce such as cabbage, plantain, yam, and is one of the many communities under the Planting for Food initiative.
Mr. Kwao stressed that most of the harvest go waste due to the terrible road network, coupled with exorbitant transportation fares, therefore, the residents want the government’s intervention to save the food basket.
Responding to the appeal of the community when contacted, the Municipal Chief Executive said the municipality has 278 communities competing for the limited distribution of the national cake.
To this end, it becomes pretty challenging for the Assembly to embark on projects at the same time across the communities, hence, the constituents must be patient in their developmental requests, as it would be evenly distributed.
According to the MCE, the fact was that the magnitude of developments within the area could not be done without the support of the people, and called on them to contribute their widow’s mite towards the development of their respective communities.
