The mutual relationship that has existed between Aboso Gold Limited (AGL), located at Damang in the Prestea Hunni-Valley Municipality, and it host communities appears to be bearing dividends, particularly for the host communities.
The formation of the Damang Mine Community Consultative Committee (DMCCC) is really deepening the relationship, and the host communities appear to have made good use of the opportunity.
The gold company had earmarked 60% of its employment opportunities to the host communities through the DMCCC.
The Employment Committee of the DMCCC is responsible for all host communities’ recruitment into the mining company.
From January to July this year, a total of 153 community members, who live in each of the nine host communities of the mining company, secured various employment opportunities through the DMCCC Employment Committee.
The DMCCC Employment Committee, established some years ago, is the conveyor belt on which people who live in the nine host communities secure employment in the mining company.
The DMCCC Employment Committee is made up of representatives of each host community, including elected Assembly Members, chiefs and opinion leaders.
The host communities are Aboso, Amoanda, Bompieso, Hunni-Valley and Koduakrom. The rest are Nyamebekyere, Kyekyewere, Twenda, Subri and Damang.
At a DMCCC stakeholders meeting held last Friday, the committee members agreed that their two-year term office had come to an end, and they needed to hand over to new committee members.
Giving account of his stewardship, the immediate past Chairman of the Employment Committee of the DMCCC, Mr. Justice Mensah, told the meeting his administration had supervised a number of projects for the communities, which had come into fruition.
He mentioned the Hunni-Valley Clinic, Aboso Library and water projects for the communities. He added, however, that from January to July this year, a total of 153 community members had secured employment in the gold company.
The Chairman pleaded with the mining company to increase the employment quota reserved for the community to 80-20, from the normal 60-40 employment opportunity.
Mr. Abdul Razak Yakubu, General Manager, Sustainability and Projects, told the meeting that all the projected projects earmarked for the communities, as recommended by the DMCCC, had been completed.
This year, he included some projects such as the construction of the 350-bed capacity dormitory for the Hunni-Valley Senior High School, which would be completed in 2021.
The designs of the dormitory, he added, were such that teachers would get three bedroom flat out of the project.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr. Isaac Drasmani, commended the mining company for opening up its business and mining activities to the communities.
Stakeholders at the meeting also raised several questions, which were clarified by the mining company.
The company also tutored the host communities on the dangers of cyanide.
