The vigilance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency, leading to the arrest of a suspected Togolese national at the ongoing voter registration exercise, has pushed members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into silence.
Elvis Kokou Seglah, who could not speak any Ghanaian language or even a little pidgin English except French, was fished out from a queue of registrants at the Assemblies of God polling station at Ataa Saki in the Mlitsekpo Electoral Area, where he attempted to register to acquire the Ghanaian voter ID card.
“His own admission that he was a Togolese, after some questions were posed to him on intelligence gathered by hardworking officials of the NPP gave him out,” Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, Kpone-Katamanso NPP parliamentary candidate, told newsmen at a presser at his campaign office last Friday.
Elvis Kokou Seglah was picked on Wednesday and is currently in the coolers of the Kpone Municipal Police Command, where he told the police that though his father is a Ghanaian from Anloga, his mother is a Togolese, where he has spent most of his life.
This, the Kpone-Katamanso NPP described as palpably false, especially when Elvis could not mention his lineage at Anloga after further probing by the police.
If he were able to mention his family home at Angloga, Hopeson Yaovi Adorye said: “The police would enquire at Anloga to confirm, and if it proved right, we would let him go. He could not even speak the Ghana Ewe to answer the questions posed to him.”
Elvis, through a translator at the police station, said he wanted to acquire the Ghana voter ID card for employment in Ghana because his father is a Ghanaian.
Not enthused by his explanations and the cold that some NDC members from the Constituency caught at the police station last Wednesday, Hopeson Yaovi Adorye and the NPP said the police must press legal charges against Elvis Kokou Seglah, “and if at the court he is able to defend himself and the court acquits and discharges him for any wrongdoing, we will let him register.”
Mr Adorye alleged that the NPP in the constituency knows the whereabouts of some Togolese the NDC had brought in to illegally acquire the Ghanaian voter ID card.
“But I want to tell the NDC that we have placed a 24/7 surveillance on these Togolese. We will monitor them to the registration centers and pick them up. We know the centers the NDC have designated for them, and we are closely monitoring.
“We sincerely believe the military and police operation teams deployed to ensure that no other persons other than Ghanaians register will continue to execute their mandate, since it is for acts such as this that they were brought into the constituency,” Hopeson Yaovi Adorye said.
He concluded: “We want to reiterate our call on the police to expedite actions on criminal processes which are required to prosecute the arrested Togolese to serve as a deterrent to all others conceiving such evil thoughts.”
Oko Dagadu Ofei, Constituency Chairman for the NDC at Kpone-Katamanso, told The Chronicle via the telephone that Elvis Kokou Seglah, whose paternal lineage is a Ghanaian from Anloga but with a maternal lineage from Togo is known in the electoral area.
He alleged that the guys who picked up Elvis from the queue were known land guards who claimed were National Security operatives, “and as Ghanaians, we don’t understand why the Kpone Police Commander would allow himself to be controlled by Hopeson and the NPP.”
Mr Ofei said the NDC managed to get bail for Elvis Seglah on Thursday, but was surprised to hear that he was invited by the Tema Regional Police Command on Friday.
The NPP and Hopeson, he said, hurriedly held a press conference to denounce a guy “we all know in the electoral area.”
To him and the NDC, the NPP are bent on succeeding with their set agenda by claiming that there are Togolese on the Ghanaian electoral roll, “but I can tell you that they will not succeed.”
