The current Secretary and immediate past Chairman of the Adansi Asokwa Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Samuel Awui, and Peter Kwabena Ameyaw, have served a 48-hour notice on the leadership of the party to reverse its decision to allow Samuel Binfo to contest the upcoming primaries.
According to them, they would proceed to court if their grievances are not addressed within the stated period.
The two, through their lawyer, Kweku Paintsil, have written to the National Chairman and the General Secretary of the party, and copied to the Chairman of the Council of Elders, the Majority Leader, the Ashanti Regional Secretary, and the Chairman of the Adansi Asokwa Constituency.
The letter, sighted by The Chronicle, stated that the complainants were shocked to hear that Samuel Binfo, having qualified to contest the parliamentary primary, had been disqualified.
According to the complainants, Samuel Binfo was disqualified by the National Vetting Committee, and the decision was not changed by the Steering Committee.
Again, the letter, dated June 8, 2020, said at the last National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the decision of the Steering Committee disqualifying Samuel Binfo was not changed.
Prior to the meeting, the letter said the two had petitioned the National Parliamentary Vetting Committee on Samuel Binfo.
“However, our clients have learnt to their utter shock, surprise and disappointment that the General Secretary of the party has announced that Samuel Binfo, a disqualified aspirant, has been named as a contestant in the Adansi Asokwa Constituency primary.
“We are instructed to write to your good offices to demand an immediate review of the announcement, which is contrary to the decisions of the Steering Committee and NEC, which they believe may have come about as a result of an oversight on the part of those responsible.”
The letter continued that the aggrieved individuals have exhausted all internal grievance procedures, in accordance with the party’s constitution.
“The party is hereby given 48 hours upon receipt of this letter to respond. Our clients instruct us firmly to proceed to court to ventilate their cause if their grievances are not appropriately dealt with within this time frame,” Lawyer Kweku Y. Paintsil, Esq signed.
At a press conference last Monday, the party’s General Secretary, John Boadu, announcing parliamentary aspirants for the party’s upcoming primaries, mentioned that the Adansi Asokwa Constituency would be contested by the incumbent, Kwabena Tahir Hammond, and Samuel Binfo.
