The anti-armed robbery squad from the Ashanti Regional Police Command has shot and killed two notorious armed robbers, after the latter engaged them in a gun battle.
DSP Agyeman Adjen, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, at a press briefing in Kumasi yesterday, said on Tuesday June 9, 2020, his outfit received intelligence that a group of armed robbers, noted for car snatching and other robberies of gold dealers in the region, were preparing to engage in another operation.
According to him, a team of officers from the Regional Headquarters was dispatched to foil the operation and arrest the suspects.
While the police personnel were on their way, they met a black BMW saloon car with registration No GR 7625-12, with about six persons on board at Santasi.
He said the suspects, upon seeing the police team approaching their direction, opened fire in an attempt to escape, compelling the officers to return fire, which resulted in the death of two of the persons on board the BMW car.
He disclosed that a police officer also sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment, but is in stable condition.
Meanwhile, the remaining suspects, who are believed to have sustained gunshots wounds, abandoned their vehicle and managed to escape.
He underscored that the deceased and the others who managed to escape are suspected to be Fulani armed robbers who masterminded the Manso Dadiese robbery, where three persons, including the driver of the Amansie South District Chief Executive (DCE), was murdered.
He said an immediate search in the vehicle revealed one SMG rifle loaded with seven rounds of ammunition, one Sigh Sauer SP 2022 pistol, also loaded with eleven rounds of ammunition.
The Deputy Commander indicated that the BMW car, together with the weapons, are all retained at the Regional Headquarters as exhibits, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) morgue, awaiting identification and autopsy.
The Command also appealed to all medical facilities and herbal centers to be on the lookout and report any person or persons who visit their facility with wounds suspected to be from gunshots for their immediate arrest, as the suspects may be armed and dangerous.
