The Founder of the International God’s Way Church, Angel Daniel Obinim, has still not been able to meet the bail conditions to temporary free him from the jaws of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as at the time this story was being written.
Considering the lavish lifestyle of the man who heads a church with hundreds of followers in the country, many believe he should not spend even an hour in meeting his bail conditions.
However, Obinim has spent, at least, two days in cells because he has still not been able to meet the bail condition of GH¢100,000 with three sureties, one of who must be justified.
Events leading to his arrest and sweat over the bail conditions, leave many to wonder whether the self-acclaimed angel of God has been deserted by his guardians, who move on wings.
The woes of the self-exalted Angel began when the man who says he only sees two things when he sleeps – money and fight – Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament (MP) Assin Central Constituency, resolved to take him on.
Kennedy Agyapong launched investigations into the activities of Angel Obinim, and through his radio and television stations, damning allegations were levelled against the latter.
Voice recordings were played and people were on Kennedy Agyapong’s TV station testifying against Obinim. While at that, it was alleged that Obinim dupes people, particularly his church members, for money.
The allegations included a gold scam, which Kennedy Agyapong said had led to people dying through Obinim. Kennedy Agyapong persistently released missiles of exposé against Obinim, and the latter rebutted with insults on his television station.
Later, the MP threatened to have Obinim arrested for what he described as his ‘evil deeds,’ following, which he announced on his TV station that he had reported the pastor to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
The CID stepped out to invite Angel Daniel Obinim for questioning, and news went rife that the ‘Angel’, who appeared healthy when the police arrived, suddenly fell ill and had to be taken to a hospital around the East Legon Police Station. The police patiently waited and arrested him on Tuesday, and he has since been in custody.
The police issued a statement announcing the arrest and conditions for bail. The announcement came at a time when a video of a renowned pastor, who had commanded respect in the country sometime in the past, Emmanuel Apraku, popularly known as ‘Apraku My Daughter’, popped up on social media. Many will recall how the name Apraku My Daughter came about.
Unfortunately, news broke of the demise of Apraku My Daughter, and many have attributed his death to a video of him looking drunk, which went viral on social media, which he perhaps, could not endure.
The ex-wife of the deceased told the media, amid tears, that if only her former husband had listened to her counsel, he may not have died in that state. What advice, she did not state in the interview with Kofi TV.
According to her, she had to end the marriage with Mr Apraku in 2003, when all her advice to him fell on deaf ears. She said herself and the daughter had come to check up on him after watching the video, but unfortunately met his death.
Vociferous Kennedy Agyapong, who has vouched to deal with fake pastors, said on his TV station on Wednesday evening, after the news of Apkraku’s death came out, that fake pastors have bad ends. He said Apraku once had over 20 cars, but in the end was seen in the video looking tattered and drunk.
He added: “We are doing all these not because I hate any individual, but because we want people to know the truth. For me, even at the point of death, I will not lie, I tell you. So, people should learn from this. Now to the fake pastors, you’ll have a very sad end to life.”
The MP then moves to his current project work, Obinim, and announced that when the CID finishes with the pastor, he would be picked up by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Kennedy Agyapong claims Obinim engaged in money laundering when he used the bank accounts of some of his boys to transfer moneys into his private account in Spain.
Curiously, the pastor, who claims to appear in people’s dreams and can disappear any time, has been in the cooler for more than a day. A former High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, known for his comic jabs on events in Ghana, took to his twitter to comment on Obinim.
He tweeted: “#Obinim has been arrested? I understand he’s being visited by his legal representatives, Messrs Nimokafui and Ayantafri. Or maybe he can turn into a snake and slither out of the police station.”
Later, he posted another tweet as a comment on a post, with Obinim seen praying for some police officers who had knelt before him, and said: “Forgive me officers, for I have snakily sinned,” Jon tweeted.
At the time of going to press yesterday, Angel Obinim was still struggling to raise the bail bond.
