The Apostolic Church Ghana through its National Women’s Movement has donated some PPEs to the female inmates of Sunyani Central Prison in the Bono region to aid them in the fight against Covid-19.
The items valued at over GHc20,000 – included 20 bags of rice,10 gallons of cooking oil, 230 pieces of hand sanitizers,110 pieces of toilet rolls, 5 cartons of sanitary pads,100 pieces of facemasks and100 pieces liquid soap among others.
“We are here to present these items to you to enable you step up measures to fight the novel coronavirus. We believe the items would help you for now, as we prepare to offer more support in the future”, Deaconess Theodora Owusu Asubonteng, National Women’s leader of the Apostolic Church Ghana said, when she handed over the items at a short ceremony in Sunyani.
Quoting Deuteronomy 16:17 which states: “Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you”, Deaconess Owusu Asubonteng urged Ghanaians to cultivate a giving heart.
She also encouraged the prisoners to stand firm despite the hardship they find themselves in.
According to her, Jehovah has good plans for them and perhaps they were supposed to pass through the prison before they get to their final destination in life.
She said the Women’s Movement of the Apostolic Church Ghana has taken upon itself to support individuals, organisations and other cooperate bodies in the country, who are in need of support to overcome some of their challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to her, the Women’s Movement subsequently resolved to visit the female inmates of Sunyani Central Prison because of their vulnerability.
Deaconess Owusu Asubonteng said the Women Movement also donated to other societies in the country, in line with the Social and Corporate Responsibilities of the church.
She urged other churches and individuals to emulate their gesture, since the holy bible admonishes the church to reach out to persons in need.
Receiving the items on behalf of the female inmates, DSP Mary Asante Sarfo, Second in Command at the facility, thanked the church and the Women’s Movement for the donation and used the opportunity to enumerate the challenges they are going through and called on the general public to regularly come to their aid.
She mentioned stigmatisation and neglect as some of the problems the inmates face after serving their sentences.
The Sunyani Area Head of the Apostolic Church, Pastor Peter York Otu, said the visit and the donation to the Sunyani Central Prison is based on the scripture to help the needy.
He advised the inmates and the general public to adhere to the safety protocols to ensure that the country wins the fight against Covid-19.
Pastor Otu gave assurance that the church is ready to follow the protocols if the government lifts the ban on church activities and continue to donate to the needy in the society.
