The Upper Denkyira East Municipality has recorded its first case of the Coronavirus, since Ghana reported its first two cases on March 12, this year, the Municipal Director of Health Services, Dr. Paul Boateng has announced.
The case happens to be the only positive case out of 22 results received from the Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research (NMIMR) on Tuesday.
A statement issued yesterday by the Municipal Health Directorate explained that the patient is a 31-year-old male, who lives and works in Accra and said to have travelled from Accra to Obuasi through Kumasi on March 28, 2020.
It said the COVID-19 patient, who had a history of cough, sore throat, headache, fever and abdominal pains lived briefly in Obuasi and another town in the Ashanti region, as well as two towns in the Upper West district, before coming to Dunkwa-on-Offin for medical care.
The statement further said the patient used public transport (trotro) and Okada and was in an improvised face mask.
The Municipal Director disclosed that the patient is currently being kept in isolation and is improving and responding to treatment while contact identification and tracing has started.
Meanwhile, Dr. Boateng has indicated that his outfit is awaiting a further 58 results of samples sent to the laboratory recently.
According to Dr. Boateng, the Ghana Health Services on Tuesday took three more samples to be sent to the laboratory for testing.
He assured residents in the Municipality that the Upper Denkyira East Multi Sectorial team is working tirelessly to ensure that the situation is contained and urged members of the public to cooperate with various health teams by providing information readily to avert spread of rumours and false information.
The health Directorate also cautioned against stigmatisation of suspected cases and their families and friends in order not to derail its preventive efforts.
- Boateng also stressed on the need for the public to always stay home, wear facemasks , avoid large gatherings and hand shaking, as well as ensure regular washing of hands and maintaining social distancing protocols at all times.
