Former President John Dramani Mahama has dared President Akufo-Addo and his government to investigate and prosecute him and his appointees if they have any evidence of corruption against them.
Mahama’s rather strong show of bravado, comes at a time when the public is calling on him to respond to allegations of corruption against his government – recent ones being the famous Airbus scandal and a power purchase deal.
Mahama, who had ‘zipped’ his lips on the matter, rather, in a virtual conversation on Thursday, challenged the sitting government to do their worst – prosecute him and his appointees.
According to Mahama, he believes in the idea that government officials should be held accountable for their deeds while in office or after leaving.
As such, “I told my appointees to be ready for any accountability process,” he said adding that he is also ready for investigation and prosecution.
The Akufo-Addo government has been criticised by a section of the public over the dormant nature of the Special Prosecutor’s office.
Ghanaians who believe in the President’s promise to have corrupt appointees investigated and prosecuted seem not satisfied with the output of the SP’s office judging from the way they hailed the appointment of Mr Martin Amidu, head of the new office.
Sympathisers of the New Patriotic Party in particular believe the slow pace of prosecution of corrupt appointees of former President Mahama has given their opponents the effrontery to tease the government about its promise to prosecute them.
