The parliamentary race of the Ejisu Constituency is becoming keener but nastier, as the two aspirants, Kwabena Owusu Aduoni, the incumbent and Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, and Mr. John Kumah, Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurial and Innovation Programme (NEIP), brace themselves for the contest anytime soon.
But, while in waiting, some sympathisers are muddying the waters and are at each other’s throats in defence of their preferred candidates.
The hostilities are evidenced in the arrest last week Thursday of one Dominic Danquah, a political aide to Mr. John Kumah, a parliamentary aspirant of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ejisu Constituency, by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) police in Kumasi.
The arrest followed a complaint by Nana Osei Bonsu, a student and party activist, perceived to be in the opposition camp of the parliamentary aspirant.
The complainant alleges that Danquah has been trailing and threatening him wherever he goes, because he (Osei Bonsu) is opposed to John Kumah’s candidature.
He claims the suspect has been secretly following him and thus endangered his life.
“Whenever, I pull up, he will also park, either a motorbike or vehicle, not far from my car,” the complainant told the police.
“He has also been asking friends about my place of residence, and it will be foolhardy to ignore or take things for granted,” he said.
Detective Inspector Eric Aglah, who confirmed Danquah’s arrest, said the caution statement of the suspect had been taken.
The investigator said Danquah would be arraigned before court as soon as investigations into the complaint are over.
The Ejisu NPP parliamentary ticket is being keenly contested by the incumbent, Mr. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, and Mr. Kumah.
Meanwhile, Nana Osei Bonsu has outlined some unhealthy developments in the party in the Ejisu Constituency which need urgent attention to avert the destruction of internal cohesion.
Raising his concerns at a press conference at Kwamo near Ejisu, Nana Osei Bonsu reminded the contestants that internal party elections should not be reduced to a do-and-die fair, for which anybody should be reckless, and cautioned that becoming an MP was not the only way one can be useful to a community or constituency.
The activist said the sitting MP has been outstanding in his performance and an example of integrity and loyalty to the party.
He said by dint of the hard work of the MP, the constituency has had its fair share of development and projects dotted across the area, an indication of meritorious service to the constituents.
The embattled activist admonished anybody seeking to replace the MP to engage in decent and healthy campaigns and avoid political mischief, maligning, lies, and mudslinging without provocation.
Nana Osei Bonsu also denied claims by John Kumah that he (Osei Bonsu) had been arraigned before court for forgery, which false allegation could be cross-checked with the Juaben Circuit Court of the Ejisu Divisional Police Headquarters.
