The Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF) is set to distribute some two hundred thousand (200,000) hygiene items and one million face masks to forty thousand (40,000) households in the various Zongo communities across the country.
Some of the items like liquid soap and hand sanitiser will be donated to hospitals and clinics located in Zongo communities.
The mode of distribution would be through Zongo Chiefs, Imams and by door-to-door, to maintain the social distancing protocol, the Chief Executive Officer of the ZoDF, Alhaji Arafat Sulemana Abdulai told the media.
He added that all the products to be distributed were produced locally by entrepreneurs in the various Zongos communities across the country, with support from the Zongo Ministry.
Explaining the rationale behind the distribution of the items, the CEO said his institution hopes to achieve “the betterment of the Zongo folks to be prepared to combat COVID-19 and beyond.”
However, he indicated that the production of the items will be a lifetime business to help the people in the Zongo communities to be able to live a life that meets international standards, as far as health is concerned.
He said the products have been approved by the Food and Drugs Authority and other requirements have been met as well.
Addressing the media, the Minister for Inner City and Zongo Development, Dr Mustapha Hamid described the move as deliberate and a part of government’s agenda to boost local production.
“I must also add that at the back of this, there are Zongo health professionals like Doctors, Epidemiologists, Nutritionists and so on, who have volunteered in the next 3 months, on the back of this, to do public education within the Zongo communities on how to also protect ourselves against COVID-19,” he asserted.
