The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has created temporary open markets to ease congestion at the existing markets as a strategy to slow the spread of the COVID-19.
The temporary open markets are the Chemu open market, which is serving Communities 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. In view of this, the main Tema Central Markets at Communities 4, 7, 8 and 9 have been closed.
The Tema Community One Main Market is operating partially with temporary open markets created at the Oninku and Twedaase Schools parks. These plan ‘B’ measures are to enable the traders observe the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) social distancing directives as Ghana and the world battle the Coronavirus pandemic.
At a brief media engagement organised by the TMA to appeal to industries in the metro to support the assembly in the fight against COVID-19, Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, the MCE, explained that a Public Health Emergency Committee, which he chairs, is working tirelessly to ensure that all health directives to combat the Coronavirus are not disregarded.Additionally, he said, the team is working hard to ensure the enforcement of the President’s restriction orders.
He said: “Compliance levels of the Restriction Order issued by the President in the Tema Metropolis has been generally high. However, there have been pockets of challenges within the densely populated communities such as Tema Manhean and the inner cities and few other localities in Tema Central.”
Another issue that has breached the protocol on social distancing, and thus, raised some security concern is the overcrowding at the Tema Canoe Basin. This, Mr Anang-La explained, is due to the weeks of significant bumper catch.
“But, steps are being taken to address them. We need you, the media, to assist us in educating our people on the need to observe social distancing at all cost in these abnormal times,” he noted.
Commending the team of security personnel and health committee for working hard to save the Tema Metro, which has, so far, recorded a zero case of COVID-19 patient, Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La appealed to all business institutions, companies, public spirited individuals and faith based organisations to support the assembly in cash and kind to enable it feed the sick, poor and needy during this difficult period. Lastly, he appealed to all business entities and churches in the Metro to do more of their benevolence in Tema than sending all such kind and cash gestures to ‘national’.
