… More Boom Speeches In The Pipeline
By Inusa Musah
Professor Kwesi Botchwey, Chairman of the fact-finding committee appointed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to examine why the party lost 2016b elections, has handed over the 455-page deadly report to former President Jerry Rawlings, founder of the party. This is going to further stock his dictions to boom at the members of party he founded on the premise of probity, accountability and social justice.
Jerry Rawlings is expected to thoroughly study the voluminous report submitted to his office yesterday. And after a careful study and analysis, Jerry, noted for his roaring speeches, is expected to descend heavily on the leadership, whose selfishness and greed, he had earlier argued at Wa, accounted for their party’s disgraceful show in the 2016 elections.
According to information The Chronicle gathered from a source in the NDC, the former Finance Minister, yesterday, dashed to the Ridge office of Mr. Rawlings to present the 455-page post-mortem report to him, after he had met with the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NDC at the party’s headquarters, Accra.
After his preliminary statement before handing over the report to the NEC for brief study, the Deputy General-Secretary of the party, Koku Anyidoho, insisted that the contents of the report would not be made public, saying, “The closest journalists would get to it was at the ceremony.” But, Professor Botchwey rubbished the bluff of Koku Anyidoho, as he gave an insight into some of the recommendations at a press briefing.
The voluminous document is titled ‘Listening To The Voice Of The Grassroots’. Professor Botchwey, who led the fact-finding committee on its journey across the country, first handed it to the party’s National Chairman, Ebenezer Kofi Ofori Portuphy. Briefing the NEC, Professor Kwesi Botchwey made eight recommendations, among them a couple, which Jerry Rawlings had been trumpeting.
And to the fact-finding committee leader, the recommendations, when implemented, would win the NDC party the 2020 polls. Among the recommendations were Jerry Rawlings’ earlier call for the restoration of the integrity of the biometric register and the expanded Electoral College, and reconnecting itself properly to its social democratic roots, and the principal actors in the social democratic roots.
The recommendations captured another of JJ’s clarion call, which proposes steps the party has to take to restore the capacity and effectiveness of the its organs, especially, at the branch level, where the NDC believes these organs are the most critical, because they are the party’s immediate connection to the people.
Another was that the party put together a group of credible and eminent members to undertake a peace-building and healing countrywide, and also recommendations on ways it can and must improve the collation of election results.
In addition, it recommended that steps ought to be taken to strengthen research and intelligence in the party, explaining that this should involve crowding in a larger body of the party’s intellectual base, which has not been particularly active in the past. This, the recommendation believes, will help to support the party’s research capacity. The report also recommended that the party scales-up and re-invigorates its work, in the area of youth organisation.
Last, but not the least, the report recommended the organisation of women, noting that significant changes had taken place in the country’s demographic profile, and that the party ought to take notice of this, and all the implications of these changes.
Receiving the document, before it would be sent to Jerry, the General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, said the NEC would meet and deliberate over the findings of the committee, “and take necessary steps to avert the shortfalls found by the report.” He indicated the party is happy with the work done by the committee.
On Joy News at 5:00pm yesterday, Koku Anyidoho told the news anchor that he was hopeful that Jerry Rawlings would join the party’s 2020 campaign train, on the premise that the founder had maintained that everybody who mattered in the NDC was brought onboard, after the party had sincerely united all the rank and file.
