…. Rawlings Yells At June 4th Anniversary In Wa
From Musah Umar Farouk, Wa
When Mr Victor Smith started a radio war against his former boss, Jerry John Rawlings for the alleged role the latter played in the humiliating defeat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), little did he know that the former military ruler was only waiting for the June 4th anniversary to launch a counter attack, and he did that with precision.
Yesterday, the Former President was not only firing from all angles, but appeared to have exposed the secret that compelled him to sack his former secretary with a mere text message.
To Mr Rawlings, Victor Smith is a political ‘419’ due to his insincerity and clandestine moves to divert monies meant for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), when the late John Mills was the flag-bearer.
Victor Smith, who was Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in former President John Dramani Mahama’s government, was former President Rawlings’ Spokesperson, until he, Rawlings, discovered Mr. Smith’s ‘thievery’ move and kicked him out of his position.
“There is so much flame inside me but I have decided to postpone the boom…but this boy, Victor Smith, is a political 419,” JJ Rawlings ranted yesterday at Wa, where he climaxed this year’s June 4 celebration, held under the theme: ‘Restoring the values of probity, accountability and truth in contemporary governance’.
Recalling how he showed Victor Smith the exit from his office, Mr. Rawlings said the former dubiously wanted to conceal contributions from some Nigerians, who willingly wanted to help the NDC, when the late President John Evans Atta Mills was the party’s flag-bearer.
“This boy, Victor Smith, was my secretary, when these Nigerians invited us to the USA to give a talk and commission some business, and then they decided to help the NDC when Mills became flag-bearer.
“They wanted to deal directly with my office and Victor Smith, being my secretary, told the Nigerians that any money they wanted to give to Mills, then the flag-bearer, should come through him,” he explained.
JJ Rawlings said following the insincerity and to and fro reasons from Victor Smith, the Nigerians failed to send the contributions.
He said neither he nor Professor Mills eventually received any contributions from the Nigerians, “and when the time to pour poison on me started, this boy, Victor Smith, went on the radio stations to tell the world that contributions for nationalistic duty to the party had been stopped from coming to me, but to the flag-bearer.
“What angered me more was the silence of Professor Mills all these while, this boy, Victor Smith, was pouring poison on me. Professor Mills knew that Victor Smith was not telling the truth, but he was very quiet.
“Then at our last moment of campaign at the stadium, Accra, a character…domestication…mounted the NDC platform to accuse and malign me of taking five million dollars from Abacha, when I had explained that only two million dollars came to me, which I used for nationalistic purpose.”
Mr. Rawlings said he made sure that he drove the NDC, which he founded with his wife and other loyalists, with sincerity in accountability.
“However, some ‘419’ members like Victor Smith, should give the NDC a cause to worry if you’ll not open your eyes or minds properly.”
JJ Rawlings said he had been trying hard to emulate the tolerance of the traditional leaders in the country, but he could not go beyond a certain limit “because of the persistent foolishness from some of people.”
He said he and his wife have continued to stand by and protect the ideals of probity, accountability and social justice, therefore, the cruel humiliations, political insults and unimaginable consequences he and his wife have continued to suffer from the members of the party they founded.
He, therefore, said it was not surprising how his party members have continued to design means to lower the command he has been enjoying from the grassroots and loyalists.
JJ Rawlings said he nearly quit the NDC, but he said he needed to stay in the party to fight for the ideals of June 4.
Lastly, he told the NDC to emulate the New Patriotic Party (NPP), whose members revere founding fathers at functions.
