The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has reiterated its call on the Ghana Police Service to ensure that persons who played any role in the attack on a Kumasi High Court are arrested, charged, and prosecuted.
Contained in a statement signed by Benson Nutsukpui, National President, and Justin A. Amenuvor, National Secretary, yesterday, the GBA says it is a threat to the rule of law, if the impression is created that persons who engage in lawless acts can escape the long arm of the law.
The statement came a day after eight members of the Delta Force, a vigilante group aligned to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), were discharged by a Kumasi Circuit Court for want of evidence.
The eight members of the Delta Force were standing trial for allegedly storming the Kumasi Circuit Court on April 6, 2017, to free 13 of their members who were standing trial for vandalising property at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, and assaulting the Regional Security Coordinator, George Agyei, because they were against his appointment by President Akufo-Addo.
The group claimed that Mr. Agyei was an opportunist, therefore, they wanted President Akufo-Addo to appoint their leader, who was instrumental in the NPP’s 2016 elections campaign, and its subsequent victory.
The eight were, therefore, charged with disturbing a court session, for resisting arrest, and freeing the 13 persons who were in lawful custody.
At a court hearing in Kumasi, Wednesday May 18, this year, the case against the eight was dismissed, due to the absence of evidence.
Based on this reason, that the GBA described the turn of events as disturbing, albeit, it said it is hopeful that the discharge of the accused persons would not signify an end of the matter.
It, consequently, called on the police to interview the court officials, lawyers and litigants who were in court on the day, in order to gather evidence to re-arrest, charge and prosecute anybody involved in the criminal act.
