Yesterday was a Mother’s Day in Ghana. As typical of my writing I write to celebrate an amazing young mother to many destitute children in Ghana. Before traveling to Ghana to launch EXCEL! at the British Council on 30th March this year, I was specifically looking for a Ghanaian lady Poet I had watched on a WhatsApp video a while back. I was dying to have her perform at my book launch. After finally getting in touch with her and getting to know her as Sabukie Osabutey, she agreed much to my delight to perform at my event. Little did I know she was an institution. But before I delve into her charitable work and her passion, let me tell you all about how this amazing young talent stole the show at my book launch. Hmmmmm!
So, on the day of my book launch Sabukie mounts the stage and with an impish look, darting eyes and clearly visibly outlined high cheekbones, Sabukie literally seized the moment. You need not be a rocket scientist to tell she is a naturally confident person. But her confidence was at an all-time high as soon as she was up stage and began to take the guests through her poem- “PRAY FOR AFRICA”. She spoke with passion and spat out words as though they were tangible objects. Taking intermittent breath pauses through her recital, she brought a deafening silence to the room as the guest focused to listen with rapt attention to every word that she spoke. In a nut-shell she spoke and it seemed for a moment that the elements of nature instantly froze. She delivered an electrifying master piece in a voice so confidently reassuring. Her hands moved beautifully and in perfect coordination with her body, with those piercing words in perfect synchronization to her facial expression she spoke with fine clarity. She is a master at her craft and she delivers poetry beautifully and seamlessly in a classic piece. It was frenetic and an awe to watch. She is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I have personally never seen poetry delivered with such conviction and without doubt I have been to my fair share of such shows in my life time. This young talent can be described as wired on her conviction of hope for Africa.
So, who is this young lady I celebrate on Mother’s Day and why has she not come to the attention of our leaders and literally “the political big shots” in Ghana for what she does? Was she not a better choice (in comparison to Kofi Adu aka Egya Koo) of highlight on Akufo Addo’s Investiture when the world had their lenses on Ghana?
Sabukie Osabutey is a young Ghanaian social entrepreneur, creative writer, poet and lifestyle blogger whose versatility has been recognized by several Ghanaians and many others across the globe. She started writing at an early age of ten. She was introduced to stage performances by her dear mum (whom she speaks fondly of) who coached her on how to sing at events such as wedding ceremonies, birthday parties etc. After graduating from high school (where she served as the President of the Young Writers’ and Debaters’ Club as well as the Editorial Board, the Regimental Sergeant Major of the school’s Air Force Corps among many other positions) she started poetry. Sabukie’s writings are imaginary, vivid and thought-provoking as she weaves her words into a beautifully structured African poetic piece. Her first ever written piece, My Black Man Is not a Zombie has been frequently recommended by poetry lovers because of the mental imagery it creates with reference to pre-slavery days in African history.
This young talent is only twenty years old. She has no children of her own and yet her foundation (SOF- Sabukie Osabutey Foundation) helps so many children with intellectual disabilities such as Autism, Dyslexia and the Down syndrome. She does this because she is eager to touch lives and impart humanity especial those disadvantaged and of the black race. She ones said this to me: “Dominic the central theme that runs through all I do is to be an inspiration and to people. I crave to be a good role model, a legend for others to follow”.
Her love of humanity knows no bound. Recently her foundation made donations to children in Ghana with down syndrome and autism (on the worlds down syndrome day) and they are already frantically preparing their last event of the year which will be held on world Dyslexia day (world dyslexia day).
Sabukie dreams big and has big plans. But unlike most young folks, she is exceptionally hard working. It is therefore only a matter of time before her dreams becomes reality. Watch out for her maiden album and book which she hopes to launch during the last quarter of this year.
I salute Sabukie on Mother’s Day for the joy you bring to the many disadvantage children in Ghana! Ghana must nurture and celebrate her young talent. I perceive that the founding fathers of Ghana would be delighted by the work of this young and gifted patriotic Ghanaian. Ghana, celebrates you Sabukie Osabutey.

God bless Ghana!
