From Inusa Musah, Tema
The Tema Traditional Council (TTC) says it has regretted having Robert Kempes Ofosuware as the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE).
Mr. Kempes, who was nicknamed ‘Mr. Asphalt’, was the MCE for Tema between 2009 and 2012, and during his tenure, several kilometres of deplorable roads in the area were asphalted, hence his nickname.
However, Joseph Ashitey Larteh, Development and Control Chairman of the TTC, said the worst MCE Tema had ever had was Kempes Ofosuware, explaining that he deprived Tema of development.

“It is for this singular reason of the abysmal performance of Kempes Ofosuware that the TTC and the natives of Tema are vehemently fronting for an indigene as the next MCE after Isaac Ashai Odamtten,” Mr. Larteh told a section of the media at the TTC.
Not mincing words, he said the TTC’s choice to succeed “our darling son, Isaac Ashai Odamtten, is Ben Ashitey, and we want President Akufo-Addo to give this son to us.”
Defending their stance, Joseph Ashitey Larteh said indigenes of Tema had had MCEs who were very hardworking, except Mr. Kempes, who Mr. Larteh challenged to cite one beneficial development he brought to Tema.
“Kempes can only boast of an ‘Azonto Park’ at the TDC, which has become a ground for khebab sellers, he wasted our time,” Mr. Larteh said.
Joseph Ashitey Larteh, therefore, told Mr Ishmael Ashitey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, who was at the TTC to present some items and cash for Kplejoo, a traditional festival celebration, on Saturday, to convey the TTC’s request for Ben Ashitey as the next Tema MCE to the presidency.
“We will not be ready to give audience to a non-indigene as MCE. We have learnt our lessons,” he concluded.
Nii Adjei Kraku II, Tema Paramount Chief, seconded the need for Tema to have an indigene as the MCE, saying, “An indigene will revere our customs and traditions, and prioritise the development of the community.”
Continuing, he said the TTC had had talks with the presidency on this subject, and hoped their request would be granted. In his response, Ishmael Ashitey said: “President Akufo-Addo will certainly receive your message, though he is aware of your request.”
He, therefore, thanked the TTC for the reception they gave him, promising to do his best to justify the trust and confidence the region and the presidency had reposed in him. “As a son of the soil, I will not let Greater Accra Region down,” he promised.
