When he started taking the lead in the Republican Party primaries, many were those who regarded him as a crazy and insane chap, who will not last the full lap. But the more outrageous remarks he made, and the unacceptable campaign promises he pledged, the man Donald John (Kofi Manu) Trump just kept winning. His party thought it was a mistake he entered the race and it was just too late to kick him out, except in the primaries.
Unfortunately, US presidential primaries are not like the ones we have here, where power from above can turn a victor into a vanquished, and so Trump kept on winning.
My friend Sammy and I prayed that people should start taking him serious, and, as Sammy put it, anyone who can manage billions cannot be stupid. And he went on to win the Republican primaries, and had to put on the ticket, after beating some of the astute politicians to their game, and on their own terms. Jeb Bush’s dream of making history for the Bush family, as father and two sons to lead America, was either put on hold, or bashed without recovery.
An attempt by ex-presidents from both traditions to form an anti-Trump NGO, and appeal to all the good people of America never to vote for him, yielded no positive result, and on the international scene, people wondered what was wrong with the USA that of all the over two hundred million adults, no better person could be found to lead a top party, than Donald Trump.
Well, if the Republicans will be short of men, the US electorate will not be short of ideas as to who to vote for as president. So, while his opponents went screaming around, “Do not vote for Trump, he is not fit to be president,” as an astute businessman, he knew what he wanted and how to negotiate for it. He knew where his main opponent, Hillary Clinton, was falling short, and he quickly took charge of those states. Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin had been Blue States since 2000. Hillary focused only on the big cities in Pennsylvania, and Trump went to the rural areas and made them feel important; Hillary paid no attention to Michigan and Wisconsin, because she lost those two states in the primaries. She felt they did not want her, and she also decided not to appeal to them. Trump got into business and gave the “orphans” something to hope for and smile about. In the end, Clinton lost three important Blue strongholds, ceding 46 Electoral College Votes to Trump. If she had secured those votes, she would have been president-elect today.
Instead, even though she carried the popular votes, she lost the Electoral College votes, and we now have Mr. Donald John Trump (Kofi Manu, if he were a Ghanaian and Akan), president-elect of the United States of America. A great source of worry to many both home and abroad, and a great sense of loss to Akosua Hillary.
We hear of communal violence in some cities in America, and attacks on suspected Trump supporters. An anti-Trump presidency sparked out violent riots with the signature tune, “He is not my president!” But you could ask yourself whether this is America?
Such riots make major headline news for countries like Uganda, La Cote d’Ivoire and other third world nations, where democracy is still manipulated by the western powers.
But for the U.S. of A to hit the streets attacking one of the very system that the world respects that country for, democracy and the rule of law, is completely absurd.
No one has any proof of the elections being rigged, or something untoward going on during the transmission of results. Everything went on perfectly, as any normal US elections, but then to them the wrong person won, or the electorate voted wrongly. But then, why should it be Trump’s problem, and why should he be victim? He was not on the ballot as also-run, but he was on it as someone determined to win, and he won, so?
These riots must be condemned by all and by any means possible, because they are sending wrong signals to countries where America is the mentor among the youth. And until the system is brought under control, the USA will have no moral responsibility to check and condemn nations which flout the rule of law and democracy.
Where were these youth when the campaign was going on? Why did they not use half of the strength they are exerting on the streets now, to go out and get people to go and vote for the Democrats?
While the Republican supporters were out there convincing people to vote Trump, the Democrat flag bearer was calling them deplorables, a new word from the adjective deplorable, meaning a batch of people who deserve to be called wretched and abominable. Well these deplorables went on to help their candidate win the ultimate, and now it is the more comported ones who have found themselves doing the unthinkable, attacking the police, causing riots, and, can you imagine, defecating in the streets as a sign of protest, not against the election per se, but against the winner.
And while we are trying to see clearly why these youth are out there protesting, we must also have in mind that some world leaders do not see Donald Trump as a member of that all-exclusive club. During those days when he would just open his mouth and say anything at all that came into his mind, the people of the UK called for a ban on him in entering its airspace. The parliamentary debate on this, even though a ban was not imposed, clearing showed that Trump, of Scottish descent, was not wanted in the United Kingdom. The adjectives coming out from the MPs were just not British.
So Trump is now president, with half of the G8 not accepting him. But he is president of the most powerful nation in the world anyway. Trump is president, with his people not accepting him, but they could not turn the Electoral College Votes to favour their choice, so why the rioting?
If the USA could descend that low and allow her passions to overcome sense of reason and responsibility, what will it call nations where the natives will pick up machetes and butcher each other, because of disagreement?
America is the senior man in the world, and a mentor to many, friends and foes alike, we expect her to come out with acts that should be good examples to follow, but not this kind of Odododioodioo politics.
Hon. Daniel Dugan
