Ghanasoccernet.com understands that Rennes made contact with Djiku as they wanted to complete a move before the window shuts on Tuesday, August 31.
The French club lost three first-team centre-backs this summer and were desperate to bring in Djiku to stabilize their defense.
But an agreement could not be reached and the highly-regarded centre-back remains a Strasbourg player.
Having signed from Caen in 2019, Djiku has a long list of admirers in France and other European countries.
Earlier in the window, he was linked with a move to Real Betis in Spain.
