Gyan, who was playing for Serie A side Udinese then, had a difficult tournament for the Black Stars on home soil.
The 34-year-old bagged only goal - a penalty in the opening game against Guinea for the Stars and this led to a lot of criticism from the fans who expected more from the striker.
Speaking to GTV Sports+, the former Sunderland striker said he regrets representing the senior national team at the tournament because he was injured and that impacted his move to Man City.
"I regret playing at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations because I was injured but I felt I needed to sacrifice but yet I was criticized [for my performance],” Gyan said.
"I really regret playing in the tournament because even after that I had to go out for five months.
"I was supposed to sign for Manchester City but I missed.
"That has been one of my biggest regrets with the National team.”
The Ghana international has previously played for Liberty Professionals and finished 3rd on the top- scorers chart before moving abroad in 2003.
