Dong Bortey stressed that he would not feature for the ‘Wonder Club’ until he receives the financial inducement that comes with the contractual agreement he signed with the club.
The 37-year-old former Hearts of Oak playmaker has since refused to train with Olympics despite signing a two-year contract with the Accra-based side.
According to Prince George Koffie, coach of Great Olympics, he was yet to work with Dong Bortey since taking over the club last month, ruling him out of his plans.
Olympics are struggling to score goals and are yet to secure a point in their opening two Ghana Premier League (GPL) games in the ongoing season.
“When I came to the team I never met Dong Bortey. I have never trained Don Bortey. Don Bortey is not part of my team so you are making a mistake,” Coach Koffie was quoted as saying.
However, in an interview with the Graphic Sports, Dong Bortey described his coach’s statement as unfortunate and asked him to contact the management of the club before addressing issues he had no knowledge about.
He explained that he was not ready to play for a club without being paid and until Olympics realise that, he was not going to feature for them.
“I signed for a club and as part of my contract, I was due some financial benefit but as I speak to you now I haven’t received anything from Olympics,” he revealed.
“How can I feature for a club that I signed for without them paying me what I’m due? As it stands now, I am not ready to play for Olympics until they sort the financial aspect of my contract out,” he insisted.
He, however, called on Coach Koffie to rather channel his energy into turning around the fortunes of the club after going two matches without a win in the Premier League.
Dong Bortey said he was not ready to engage the coach in any banter but felt the club should have provided him with an in-depth knowledge about the issue before commenting on it.
Meanwhile, a Director of Olympics, Oloboi Commodore, has refused to confirm whether the club indeed offered Dong Bortey any financial package during his signing.
Mr Commodore attributed Dong Bortey’s inability to feature for the club to his fitness rather than a financial tussle with Olympics.
“His inability to play for Olympics has got nothing to do with any financial tussle but is rather due to an injury he sustained which made him unfit to play.
“As to whether we paid him an amount for signing, I can’t confirm that to you because I am not here to discuss someone’s contractual agreement,” Mr Commodore stated.
