Last week, it was reported that the GBA’s Disciplinary Committee had met and taken a number of decisions in a bid to help the CEO of Box Office Promotions, Alex Ntiamoah Boakye, get his money from Bukom Banku who has refused to honour a contractual agreement.
However, the GBA executive member told the Graphic Sports: “It is not true, GBA has not revoked the licence of the boxer, neither has he been fined. We have not sat down to take any decision on Banku, ignore those media reportage,” Alhaji Tofik told the Graphic Sports in an exclusive interview in Accra yesterday.
Reports has been rife in recent times in certain media circles that Banku’s pro license has been withdrawn by the disciplinary committee of the GBA over a breach of contract.
Contrary to an agreement signed in 2017, Bukom Banku has refused to honour a rematch contract he signed with Box Office Promotions to fight Bastie Samir who inflicted his first career defeat.
Alhaji Tofik told the Graphic Sports that the issue involving Banku and Box Office Promotions is out of the jurisdiction of the GBA since the GBA was not privy to any contract signed between the two.
“If Banku is owing Box Office some money it is up to Alex Ntiamoah Boakye to resort to any legitimate means to retrieve that money and that does not fall within the purview of the GBA,” he stated.
Meanwhile, when the Graphic Sports reached Briamah Kamoko for his reaction he denied that his license had been revoked, adding that he was at a loss as to how this whole story originated.
Banku burst into prominence in 2000 with his special brand of broken English and satirical pronouncements in media interviews. He warmed his way into the hearts of Ghanaians with his performances in the ring by his unbeaten run.
Over the period Banku won the African Boxing Union (ABU) and WBO Africa light heavyweight titles.
Banku recently hit the headlines in Ghana after winning his first fight outside the country. He now has a fight record of 30 wins and a loss with 23 coming by knockout.
