Allotey, the challenger, was handed a fourth round technical knockout in a World Boxing Organisation (WBO) super welterweight title fight on September 14 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in California, United States. The Ghanaian fought without the guidance of his longtime trainer who was not present at his corner because he could not travel to the USA for the fight.
However Alhaji Tofik, who promoted Allotey’s maiden professional fight 13 years ago, put the blame squarely at the doorstep of Asare whom he says must be held liable for the lopsided loss after he abandoned his boxer for national assignment without putting someone else in charge of the boxer’s preparation for the biggest fight of his career.
“Coach Asare, knowing he was nationally assigned at the time of the bout, should have allowed his deputy, Amerley Turkson, to take charge of Allotey while he [Asare] concentrates on his duties with the Black Bombers,” he stated.
The Ghanaian lost to the Mexican title holder via a fourth round technical knockout in the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) super welterweight championship at the Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, in California, USA.
Asare told the Graphic Sports last week that his boxer had told him hours before the fight that he was unhappy with his management and also disappointed at the trainer’s inability to be at his corner for the important fight.
In a post-match interview, Allotey blamed a rib injury for his abysmal performance against the title holder, Munguia.
Despite the explanation, Alhaji Tofik told the Graphic Sports last Friday that Allotey was past his prime and not in the best of physical conditions going into a world title fight, in addition to challenges he had with his preparations.
“The Allotey I knew back then is no longer the Allotey [we see] now. Also, the relationship between the management, trainer and the boxer must be properly sorted out to take the boxer where he ought to be,” he noted.
Despite the loss and managerial challenges, the veteran promoter says Allotey is not a spent force and believes he has qualities to win a world title in future if he sorts out the issues militating against his progress.
“His team must look at the rib problem, then he must start training right away, he must not relax and must be provided good sparring partners.” Read Full Story
