Unconfirmed reports say the 45-year ex-Black Stars skipper emerged as the choice of the employers having shrugged off competition from other experienced managers.
The job of the Syli Nationale became vacant following the exit of Paul Putt who was dismissed for his unimpressive showing at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt in June.
According to reports Akonnor has penned a three-year deal with the Syli Nationale and is expected to lead them to qualify for the next AFCON scheduled for Cameroun in 2021
Among some of the experienced names who applied for the job included ex-Leicester City boss, Claudio Ranieri, Florent Ibenge, Portuguese and former Burkina Faso coach, Paulo Duarte whose contract was not renewed by the West Africa country after the AFCON
The rest are Didier Six, the 65-year-old France international and former Togo coach and Francois Zahoui who is currently serving as the coach of the Niger national team.
The Ghanaian gaffer who played for Bundesliga side, Wolfsburg would be joining the Guinea national team with a depth of experience having coach clubs like Eleven Wise, Accra Hearts of Oak, Dreams FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
This would be Akonnor’s first engagement as a national team coach with his previous experiences limited to clubs.
By this appointment, Akonnor could be preparing his CV in line for possible consideration as a future coach of the Black Stars after he previously advocated for the recruitment of a local coach should the Ghana FA considered parting ways with the services of Coach Kwasi Appiah. Read Full Story
