Undefeated Mohammed, who earned a third round stoppage victory over Sackey under controversial circumstances last October in Accra to claim the WBO Africa title, was ordered by the world body to fight his nemesis in a rematch.
It follows a petition by Sackey’s team to the sanctioning body for what they felt was an injustice meted out to them by Beninese referee Adorn Bertin who stopped the bout after then champion Sackey suffered a knockdown but felt he could continue with the fight.
Violence erupted at the Bukom Boxing Arena in a crowd violence at the maiden fight between the pair at the Bukom Boxing Arena after Beninois referee Adorn Bertin stopped the fight after Wasiru had recorded a knockdown in the third round.
Referee Bertin’s decision to stop the fight without effecting the mandatory eight count led to Sackey's corner (led by his trainer, Akai Nettey) charging on the referee, which incited their fans to rowdily react in registering their displeasure.
Both camps are yet to agree on a promotional deal to allow the much expected rematch to take place after series of fruitless meetings between the pair.
According to the manager of Sackey, Evans Berne Johnson, Team Wasiru was dragging its feet to accept a rematch with Sackey on the basis of not having a promotional outfit to stage the fight.
He accused Team Wasiru of putting everything in place to avoid Sackey and asked it to rather come publicly to announce their preparedness to engage his boxer.
“We are ready to fight Wasiru because we want to prove to the entire country that Sackey was indeed cheated in the first fight but they keep dragging their feet on the basis of no promotional outfit to stage the bout.
“If they feel Sackey won’t be any match for Wasiru, why won’t they call for the bout immediately so they can just defeat him like they say,” he told the Daily Graphic.
Meanwhile, a Technical Head at Team Wasiru, Yoofi Boham, stated his outfit’s commitment to settle scores with Sackey but asked that their opponents must be ready to promote the fight.
Mr Boham explained that Wasiru would only agree to fight Sackey in a rematch should his nemesis’s camp meet them with their promoter for the bout.
“We both agreed to fight in a rematch but with Sackey being a challenger, he must come up with a promoter for negotiations for the fight because that is the only way the fight can come on,” he said. Read Full Story
