Commey, who successfully defended his title against Beltran, said the referee was right to end the bout in the eighth round with the kind of punches Beltran was receiving.
Many had blamed referee Hernandez Sr for Beltran’s loss for what they perceived was an abrupt end to a fight they felt the Mexican could have come back stronger from his knockdown.
In an interview with the Graphic Sports Online, Commey explained that he was looking forward to a knockout win in either the ninth or tenth round but the referee had to end the fight to save Beltran.
“It was the right call by the referee to end the bout because of the amount of punishment he was taking in the ring.
“I wasn’t expecting to knock him out in eight rounds due to my game plan but the referee ended the bout to prevent him from taking more punches,” Commey noted.
The 32-year-old Ghanaian is undefeated in his last five bouts with four of them coming by way of knockout victories with the likes of Alejandro Luna, Yardley Cruz, Isa Chaniev and Raymundo Beltran all suffering from stoppage. Read Full Story
