According to him, the workers of GWCL would have to change for the company to achieve its potential and improve revenue.
He explained that there are certain groups of people within the GWCL workers union, who hide behind the union to resist change adding that several policies have been dropped due to opposition from the union.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency, speaking in an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face program, described the Ghana Water Company workers union as a group that works to undermine progress.
“So far so good. As far as I know, a lot of contract have been awarded, for pipe lines to various communities. Ghana Water has a lot of potential. I think Ghana Water has a lot of potential but we need an attitudinal change. We need the support of the union. But what I have realized is that anytime you want to introduce something new that benefits the company people are opposed to it and they use the union to attack it. At Ghana Water all it takes for an initiative to die is the hoisting of the red flag.
“And I won’t hide how I feel about the union. The union has been used to distract frustrate, progressive thinking in the country.”
Mr. Afenyo Markin also accused some members of the GWCL workers union of engaging in water theft, an activity he says is affecting the company and the country negatively.
“For instance, I ask myself, the many illegal connections, people who take water without paying… what support are we getting from the union, because these are workers engaged in this.”
He called on workers of the GWCL to help in creating a healthy environment to ensure that the company strives to increase its productivity to about 10 times if workers’ union are willing to sacrifice and be cooperative.
“We need an environment where workers will be more than ready to sacrifice their all and cooperate with whoever is in office. The situation where some will cooperate and some will not, the situation where the attitude will be such that somebody will misinform the union and the union will start acting on the basis misinformation, kinI am sorry but we will not make a head way with that. We have a future. Our water system. Government has invested so much… We can do about 10 ten times what we are doing now, if the union is willing to cooperate.” Read Full Story
