Though a good number of schools in the district are benefitting from the programme, school heads say pupils refuse to eat the meals served because they are low on quality as compared to what they eat in their homes, and small in quantity to satisfy them.
This was revealed during a public education event on nutrition organized by Nestle Ghana Limited for mothers dubbed ‘Nido Nutrition Day’ in the Sekyere Kumawu District at the Kumawu Presbyterian Primary School on Saturday, June 23, 2018.
The event sought to educate mothers and caregivers on the importance of good nutrition, through a series of talks, drama and games with the endorsement of the Ghana Education Service.
Speaking in an interview with Otec News’ after the event, the Headmistress of the Kumawu Presby Primary, Mrs Lydia Owusu Afriyie, said through her school is a beneficiary of the School Feeding Programme, the quality of the meals leaves much to be desired.
“The meals served to the pupils in my school are of low quality and most of them do not eat them, complaining ‘it is not sweet, compared to what we eat in the house’. I have complained to the matron several times but I cannot see any improvement,” she said.
“The government is wasting money here because the foods are always thrown away as the pupils refuse to eat, I will plead with the authorities to intervene to save the programme and the pupils from malnutrition, taxpayers’ shouldn’t be wasted like that,” she appealed. Read Full Story
