In a statement Tuesday minutes after Mr Anyidoho’s invitation to the CID Headquarters, government said its attention has been drawn to the treasonable comment made by Mr Anyidoho “to the effect that Akufo-Addo government will be overthrown.”
The tough-talking NDC politician was picked up at the Accra International Press Center by plain-clothed officers.
The NDC leader was MC at a news conference by the Ghana First Patriotic Front, to announce modalities for their planned demonstration Wednesday, to protest the controversial Ghana-US Military Cooperation Agreement when the arrest was done.
About 16 officers besieged the Press Center to effect the arrest.
Mr Anyidoho was seen seated at the back of a vehicle flanked by the NDC National Chairman, Kofi Portuphy and General Secretary Johnson, Asiedu Nketia. But the three would rather walk to the Police Headquarters which is meters away from the Press Centre.
Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid, who signed the statement said government found it disturbing that the NDC is not condemning the act.
“We find the NDC’s reluctance to condemn Anyidoho as particularly disturbing because Anyidoho alleges that, 'the Coup d’etat is starting on Wednesday,' and we know that the demonstration on Wednesday has the full endorsement of the NDC,” he said.
The government said it is important that the NDC demonstrates its commitment to democratic governance by showing impending demonstration is not a smoke screen for fomenting insurrection as the Deputy General Secretary has alleged.
Mr Hamid said the government is calling on the NDC to show commitment to democratic governance by condemning unreservedly, the treasonable comments of its Deputy Secretary General.
“Government assures citizens, that it will take appropriate steps within the bounds of law, to protect the security of the state,” he added.
