Referee William Agbovi retires

Veteran Ghana Premier League referee William Agbovi has retired from the game after 26 years of officiating.

The Suhum based man began his career in 1992 and rose through the ranks to become one of the league’s most prominent officials during his time.

He was famously slapped with an eight match ban in 2016 after his performance during a game between Wa All Stars and Medeama in what was the most notable lows of his career.

The local scene has been flooded with allegations of bribery and corruption over the years, but Agbovi has boldly distanced himself from such misdeeds and says he is proud of his integrity as a referee.

“I have been a referee since 1992 and spent 26 years with the whistle, but have never taken a bribe before, neither have I ever been beaten,” he said.

Agbovi recently took charge of the Presidents Cup game between Hearts and Kotoko which Kotoko won on penalties.
