Government not in haste to jail Mahama boys – MP

The Akufo-Addo government is not in a hurry to prosecute former officials of the Mahama administration, Chairman of Parliament's Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, Ben Abdallah has said.

The Committee is currently working on the Office of the Special Prosecutor Bill which seeks to deal mainly with public sector corruption.

Speaking to Class News on Tuesday, 7 November, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Offinso North expressed optimism that the bill will be approved before the 2018 budget is read later this month.

He, however, believes that government should hasten slowly with the prosecution of alleged corrupt officials.

“Before you take any matter to court, you have to weigh the facts. You need to carry out thorough and comprehensive investigations. If you hurriedly proceed to court because you want Mr ‘A’ or ‘B’ to be prosecuted in order to satisfy party ‘A’ or ‘B’, your facts may not be adequate enough and this government is not in a hurry to rush to court for the sake of prosecution,” he said.

According to him, government is proceeding cautiously to ensure that due process is gone through, adding that “the necessary legal action will be taken when the time is due”.

His comments come in the wake of comments by Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia that corrupt public officials under the past government will soon be exposed and subjected to the legal process.
