Gitmo 2 living at M Plaza – Irbard

The two former Guantanamo Bay detainees transferred to Ghana in January 2016 have been residing at the M Plaza Hotel in Accra, security analyst Irbard Ibrahim has disclosed.

Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih are expected to be in the country for two years per the agreement reached between the Barack Obama and John Mahama administrations which are no more in office.

Their presence in the country was largely criticised as some Ghanaians argued it would expose Ghana to terrorist attacks.

Since their arrival, their location has been kept under wraps.

But reacting to a Supreme Court ruling that it was unconstitutional for the John Mahama-led administration to allow the US to bring the two detainees into the country on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Friday, 23 June, 2017, Mr Ibrahim said the pair do not pose any security threat and have even been residing at the M Plaza Hotel.

“The Gitmo Two have always been at the M Plaza Hotel but I don’t know whether their security protocol has changed,” he stated.

Asked to confirm if the two were indeed staying at the hotel, Mr Irbard replied: “Yes. So that tells you they don’t pose any serious security threat. For the fact that government has given them a clean bill of health and that they have been of good behaviour in the past year, it only amplifies and accentuates the long held view I’ve held that it wasn’t true that taking the Gitmo Two would pose any security threat for us as a country.”
